Welcome to the ENG 263 Course Blog

Welcome to the ENG 263 Studies in the American Culture, Spring 2010 course blog.

Please feel free to express your impressions, views and opinions based on what has been happening during class.

The Blog is open to all who wish to participate in a respectful exchange of thoughts, ideas, positions, proposals, and anything else that comes up as long as the subject is about the issues that concern the U.S. culture as a whole.

Nevertheless, I must ask the authors to identify themselves at all times.

I hope you enjoy this education experience.

Panel of Seven Regional Speakers

We have organized a panel of guest speakers from different regions of the United States for Wednesday 31 March, 2010. The panelists are:
  • Brett from Arizona
  • Travis from Texas
  • Rebecca from Colorado
  • Allan from New York
  • Stephanie from Alabama
  • Meghan from Washington
  • Amy from Minnesota
You must be prepared to participate in the discussion about Chapter 4: American Social Life, which deals with: Friendships, Parties, Invitations, Announcements, When to Arrive and Leave, Drinking Alcohol, Dinner in a Home, Relationships between Men and Women.
Prepare 3 questions on the above topics for the guest speakers and try to get an answer for at least one (since the time will be limited).
Take notes of the guest speakers' answers to your questions and/or any reflections you may have during the discussion.
Your notes will consist of:
  • the names of the guest speakers,
  • the region they come from,
  • any first impressions you may have for each of them (differences in accent, etc)
  • your question/questions
  • the answer/answers you received
  • any thoughts you may have on what is being discussed.
I expect everyone to write their personal observations on the Course Blog within Saturday 3 April, 2010, 12.00 pm. After this deadline, I will start assigning points to each of you for class participation, based on the quality of your postings.

1) The relations between boys and girls just happen in their country. They make friends in a party or school or university and between them are not contacts with hands like in Albania.
2) Almost of 50% of marriage finish in divorces and they haven`t the idea of a compact family like hapen in Albania
3) They feel more save in the U.S.A than in Albania
4) And the answer was because the women in U.S.A are more indipendent and think more for the carier.
5) Is somethin different from American culture but there are thing they really aprecheate like the hospitality.
7) There are some whom speak well but the Travis advice was to read a lot, to speak a lot and to studie a lot.

we had invited six american guest in our American Culture course and they were:Meghan(Washington)Becca (Colorado)Brett (Arizona)Travis (Texas)Stephan(Alabama)Allan(New York). Also was Amy from Minnesota. We asked them lot of question like:If someone of them have met before an Albanian emigrant and what was they first impression.ALL said no expect Allan who had met one and it was his neighborhood and the thing that they kept,Albanian flag. And other question were:1-What do you think of Albanian people? 2- How is possible that in America has so many single women? 3- My question was:When somebody goes at someone house for dinner is better that after one day to telephone him to thank and after two days to send him a letter also to say thank. Why so,does this have any special meaning? And I got the answer from Becca who said that if is a very friend of yours don't call him is natural. And Brett says that is good thing to thank the person who invites you. Also we talk about how much they college has cast only per year and it was :1-Allan 40000 per year. 2- Becca 35000 per year. 3-Amy 12000 per year. 4- Steph 6000 per year.5-Brett 4500 per year. My first impression were good one beacuse is always nice to have someone from outside country and come here to show us they thoughts and culture, this shows haw much they care and appreciate us.And I think that they deserve the same respect to be treated with.
